Paraguay’s securities market offers an increasingly useful window into how companies and issuers finance themselves and what terms investors are willing to accept. At the close of this edition, the public dashboard of the Asunción Stock Exchange shows annual traded volume of PYG 13.397 trillion. The figure must be read together with maturity, currency, liquidity and risk: an isolated rate is not enough to assess an investment.
Market snapshot
- Annual traded volume: PYG 13,397,223,012,809.
- Weighted average maturity in guaraníes: 5.74 years.
- Weighted average rate in guaraníes: 8.45%.
- Weighted average maturity in dollars: 7.23 years.
- Weighted average rate in dollars: 6.00%.
These are aggregate indicators published by the BVA and can change with new transactions. They do not describe the risk of a specific issuance or guarantee purchase or sale prices.
What it means for a company
The securities market allows companies to diversify financing sources and structure obligations with maturities different from traditional bank credit. To use it, a company must evaluate not only the rate, but also structuring and placement costs, disclosure requirements, guarantees, payment schedules and the compatibility between debt maturity and project cash flow.
What it means for the investor
Average rates of 8.45% in guaraníes and 6.00% in dollars are not directly comparable as though they carried the same risk. Currency, maturity, credit quality, liquidity and the conditions of each issuance affect expected return and exposure.
Before deciding, an investor should review who pays, where the cash flow comes from, maturity and amortization, guarantees, financial statements, credit rating when available, and the real possibility of selling the instrument before maturity.
An active market, still concentrated
Growth in traded volume broadens available alternatives, but deeper market development requires more diversity of issuers and instruments, accessible information and secondary-market trading. The development of equities and new products will be an important signal to watch in the next stages.
What to watch
- Evolution of traded volume and year-over-year comparison.
- New issuances and issuer diversity.
- Rates and maturities by currency.
- Secondary-market liquidity.
- Development of equities and new instruments.
Radar reading: Paraguay’s securities market already has meaningful scale as an alternative for financing and investment. The next leap depends not only on trading more volume, but on increasing diversity, liquidity and the information available for decision-making.
