Paraguay retail enters a more demanding phase: positive sales, slower momentum and a more selective consumer

The sector is still growing, but slower ticket growth and heavier reliance on credit make the quality of consumption, purchase frequency and commercial productivity more important.

Consumers in a modern retail environment with sales, credit and purchasing decision signals

Large stores and apparel activities accumulated 5.8% growth through July, according to data cited by 5Días. The result remains positive, but it is below the stronger expansion rates previously seen in Paraguay's shopping-centre business.

The ticket matters as much as traffic

CAPASU has also pointed to a moderation in consumption associated with a lower average ticket. The association does not describe a crisis, but rather changes in the composition and rationality of purchases. Consumer credit also remains significant for households, making delinquency, promotions and repayment capacity increasingly relevant.

For retailers and shopping-centre owners, the challenge is no longer simply attracting traffic. Sales quality, conversion, average ticket, category mix and dependence on financial discounts become central variables for evaluating expansion and profitability.

The signal remains positive, but more selective. Openings, new brands or more square metres should be tested against sales per store, occupancy, average ticket and repeat purchases. Sector growth does not automatically imply the same performance across all formats.
